Berberis haematocarpa is a large shrub or small tree. It generally is much branched
and has small yellow flowers than produce berries when mature. The flowers each have
six petals, six sepals, and six stamens whose anther sacs open by uplifting valves. The stigma is circular. The foliage is spiny.
Berberis haematocarpa prefers middle elevation meadows and canyons.
