In Bothriochloa ischaemum, the pedicelled spikelets are roughly the same length as
the sessile one. It differs from Bothriochloa bladhii in that the length of the panicle is shorter
than the length of the branches. Both species have a distinctly purple look to them, while Bothriochloa barbinodis looks silvery white.
