Mentzelia asperula is an annual herb with a slender taproot. The flowers are orange rather than white or yellow and the inflorescence bracts are entire. The leaves are basally lobed (hastately lobed). Mentzelia asperula is found at lower elevation in the Gila in rocky areas.
