Picea pungens Engelmann
(Blue Spruce, Colorado Blue Spruce)

Family: Pinaceae

Status: Native

Synonyms:
Picea parryana Sargent

Picea pungens has more rigid needles than those of Picea engelmannii, and the cones are significantly longer-- over 6 cm on the average. Picea pungens has a distinctly bluish color. It is found at middle to upper elevation in the Gila National Forest. The spruces have single needles which are attached to the branch by means of a "peg" upon which they seem to sit.
