Pleurozium schreberi is a large pleurocarpous moss that can form large carpets covering large areas of shaded upper elevation mountainsides. The best identifying characters are the large, orange, thick walled alar cells and the bright red stem that shines through when wet. In addition, the margins at the apex curve over all but the very end of the leaf giving it a distinctive appearance. We found Pleurozium schreberi first at the Taos Ski Area-- those pix are here.
