Grimmia plagiopodia Hedwig

Family: Grimmiaceae

Status: Native

Synonyms:
None

Grimmia plagiopodia forms dense tufts that are variably hoary. Only the perichaetial leaves have long awns, so only the reproductive areas in a tuft will be hoary. The concave stem leaves have short awns or are missing them. G. plagiopodia is autoicous, so it is usually reproductive when found. The short capsules have well developed peristomes and are immersed on eccentrically attached S-shaped (sigmoid) setae. The leaves are one stratose, although the margins can be two stratose. We found G. plagiopodia growing on sandstone, although it apparently is more commonly found on exposed calcareous rocks.
