Ipomoea purpurea (Linnaeus) Roth
(Purple Morning Glory)
Family: Convolvulaceae
Status: Exotic
Synonyms:
Convolvulus purpurea Linnaeus
Ipomoea purpurea is an exotic, twining herb with deep purple sympetalous flowers. The flowers are a deeper purple than those of I. hederacea when compared side by side in bright sunlight. In addition, the sepals of I. purpurea are acute but not long acuminate. The sepals of I. hederacea typically alternate a long acuminate sepal with an acute one. I. purpurea is not common in the Gila, but has escaped gardens and cultivation in a few areas especially in and around Silver City.
