Vascular Plants of the Gila Wilderness
Presented in Association with the

Jungermannia atrovirens Dumort.
Family: Jungermanniaceae
Status: Native
Synonyms:
Solenostoma atrovirens (Dumort.) Müll. Frib.
Aplozia atrovirens (Dumort.) Dumort.
Aplozia pumila subsp. atrovirens (Dumort.) Arnell
Jungermannia lanceolata var. atrovirens (Dumort.) Damsh.
Jungermannia atrovirens is very similar to J. pumila and
was at one time considered a subspecies of that taxon. J. atrovirens differs
by sexuality, however perianths are not always present. The leaf cells of
J. atrovirens have fewer oil bodies (1-3) and-- most useful under the
microscope-- also have thicker cell walls and trigones.
Many thanks to the University of Colorado Herbarium (COLO), Erin Tripp and Dina Clark for allowing us
to photograph this specimen.
