Koeberlinia spinosa Zuccarini var. spinosa
(Crown of Thorns, Crucifixion Thorn)

Family: Koeberliniaceae

Status: Native

Synonyms:
None

Koeberlinia spinosa var. spinosa is virtually impossible to mistake for any other plant in the Gila Wilderness. It seems on first glance to be nothing but green branches with huge, stout thorns. It would be a very dangerous plant to stumble upon in the night. It is found on dry hillsides and mesas at lower elevation. The fruit is a globose black berry about 5mm in diameter.
