Picea engelmannii Parry ex Engelmann var. engelmannii
(Engelmann's Spruce)

Family: Pinaceae

Status: Native

Synonyms:
None

Picea engelmannii var. engelmannii is a tall and thin tree with single needles attached to the branch. The needles are attached onto "pegs," which remain behind on the branch when the needles fall. Picea engelmannii looks similar to Picea pungens, and is distinguished from it with some difficulty. The average length of the cones helps differentiate the two species, with those of Picea engelmannii being smaller than those from Picea pungens. The best field character appears to be puberulence on the young twigs of Picea engelmannii var. engelmannii, usually absent on Picea pungens.
