Pinus monophylla Torrey & Fremont subsp. fallax (Little) Zavarin
(Arizona Single Leaf Pinon)

Family: Pinaceae

Status: Native

Synonyms:
Pinus californiarum D.K. Bailey subsp. fallax (Little) D.K. Bailey
Pinus edulis Engelmann var. fallax Little

Pinus monophylla subsp. fallax resembles Pinus edulis is most respects. It is a midsized pine with relatively short needles found in lower to middle elevations. Pinus monophylla subsp. fallax has only one needle per fascicle, while Pinue edulis has two needles per fascicle. Considerable disagreement exists regarding whether the taxon deserves species status or whether it is best considered a variety of Pinus edulis.
