Schistophragma intermedia is a small plant, reaching 3 or 4 inches in height, that resembles a small Verbena; however, the flowers are single in leaf axils rather than in terminal spikes. Also, the flowers are deeper purple and more irregular in shape (zygomorphic) than those of Verbena. Schistophragma intermedia is found at middle elevation on dry hillsides.
