Schoenoplectus americanus like all plants in the genus has a lateral inflorescence (in this case, a small bract extends above the inflorescence.) Plants in the genus Scirpus have a terminal inflorescence. Schoenoplectus americanus is a rhizomatous perennial with a three-angled triangular culm that is concave on the sides. The spikelets are all sessile and the scales are shallowly notched less than 0.5mm at the tip. Schoenoplectus americanus is found in moist areas or standing water.
