WNMU Cultural Affairs, in conjunction with the WNMU President’s Office, has made the difficult decision to cancel ¡Fiesta Latina! 2020. Given that there is no assurance as of now that large gatherings will be allowed by June, coupled with the logistics of an event this size, which require an enormous amount of pre-planning and coordination with people inside Mexico, making it happen has become less and less feasible. ¡Nos vemos en 2021!

As promised, Western New Mexico University is offering a Virtual Artisan Mercado highlighting craftspeople who’ve carried on ancient handcraft traditions and have the ability to offer their art through modern technology. Visit FiestaLatina.org to shop the virtual mercado.

A free event for the entire family!!

Friday: 4 – 10 p.m.
Saturday: 10 a.m. – 11 p.m.
Sunday: 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The signature event of WNMU, Fiesta Latina, provides an opportunity for border communities to engage with our neighbors to the south, through celebration and collaboration. Throughout the 3 day event, participants have the opportunity to explore Latin culture, rhythms, flavors and artisan crafts on the beautiful Western New Mexico University campus set in the mountains of the Southwest. This family event is now in its fourth year, hosting the Artisan Mercado featuring 40 traditional master artisans who travel to New Mexico from all across Mexico. This year we are highlighting the artisans of Michoacán. Artists are chosen by jury selection process, on the basis of several criteria: all art must be completely handmade by the artist, the use of multi-generational traditions, the use of “natural” pigments/materials, and overall quality. Artisans are selected to provide a wide array of crafts, including textiles, jewelry, pottery, bead work, copper work, and more.

Free events include a music stage featuring entertainment throughout the weekend.

Acts include: Northern New Mexico’s Cuarenta y Cinco playing a free Friday night opening concert. Also appearing are Ballet Folklorico Alfaro from El Paso, Mariachi Plata, Paseo del Norte Folklorico dancers, and cumbia by Sonido Cachimbo from Juarez. The Transcending Borders Film/Discussion Series (at Light Hall Theater) showcases documentaries on traditional Mexican crafts and techniques, with discussions hosted by visiting artisans. There will be children’s crafting activities throughout the weekend in the dedicated Children’s Tent and demonstrations by visiting artisans. New to the festival this year will be the Charro presentation on Sunday, June 21.

Ticketed events include a tequila tasting, offering tastes of 10 fine tequilas and a jarito handcrafted in Mexico; The headline show on Saturday night, June 20, featuring Elida Reyna y Avante and the Lucky Joe Band in concert.

Mexican food trucks and the Stadium Bar will be open throughout the weekend.
