The Western Institute for Lifelong Learning (WILL) invites the public for the first Spring 2021 Lunch & Learn presentation, which is free and open to the public. Each Lunch & Learn presentation this spring will be held on a Saturday from 12 noon to 1 p.m.

As our health and wellness has been an all-consuming topic the past year, WILL is bringing the public presentations on how to be pro-active and informed health consumers.

On Saturday, February 6, Silver City’s Dr. Fred Fox, MD, will expertly explain “COVID-19 Vaccination: What it is? And Why I Got Mine.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a devastating effect on every aspect of our lives. The newly developed COVID-19 vaccines introduce the possibility of controlling this global health crisis. Yet, there is reluctance to being vaccinated by an estimated 40% of U.S. residents, which could significantly reduce the overall effectiveness of vaccination efforts. In this timely Lunch and Learn presentation, Fox will discuss vaccines in general and how they work. He will also explain how these new vaccines are different from traditional vaccines and how they are potentially more effective, their expected side effects, issues of availability and access, and his own experience with receiving the required two doses of the Moderna vaccine.

Fred Fox is a Family and Public Health Physician, committed science nerd, and 33-year resident of Grant County. For 17 years he has served as the Medical Director of the nearby Greenlee County Health Department in Arizona, where he has played a central role in the collaborative COVID-19 planning and response effort. This planning included evaluation of testing methods, contact tracing, vaccination planning, and the coordinated response of the health care community. As a member of this response team, he has read hundreds of research and educational articles, participated in dozens of planning and educational meetings, and given presentations to health care personnel on COVID-19. Convinced by the evidence of the safety and effectiveness of the vaccines, he publicly was the first person to receive a COVID-19 vaccination in Greenlee County.
