The Western New Mexico University Outdoor Program is sponsoring two SKYWARN Spotter classes presented by The National Weather Service.

  • Basic SKYWARN Spotter: Monday, July 8, 2019, 6 – 9 p.m. (Prerequisite: None)
  • Advanced SKYWARN Spotter: Monday, July 15, 2019, 6 – 8:30 p.m. (Prerequisite: Basic SKYWARN Spotter)

SKYWARN Spotters are part of the ranks of citizens who form the nation’s first line of defense against severe weather, especially here in Grant County. The National Weather Service encourages anyone with an interest in public service and access to communication, such as Ham radio, to join the SKYWARN program. Volunteers include police, fire, and search and rescue personnel, dispatchers, EMTs, public utility workers and other concerned private citizens. Individuals affiliated with hospitals, schools, churches, nursing homes, or who have a responsibility for protecting others are also encouraged to become Spotters.

Both classes are free and open to the public. Registration is not required.

Current SKYWARN Spotters are welcomed to take the classes as a refresher.

Both classes will be held in the WNMU Student Memorial Building 3rd Floor Seminar Room.
