About
One of the most beloved musical artists of Nicaragua, Katia Cardenal was born in 1963. Absorbing the musical influences of her talented family where classical, folk and pop songs were cherished, she began to perform in public with her brother Salvador when she was just 15. As the Duo Guardabarranco, they sang through the revolution, and their gentle, insistent music enchanted Jackson Browne and Holly Near, who helped them record the first of their 12 albums. They toured the world, earning an OTI award and helping to shape the Nueva Canción movement.

Since her brother’s death in 2010, Katia has continued to tour and sing, building her repertoire to include songs with a feminist perspective as well as carrying on her brother’s eco-song repertoire, and never leaving behind his most beloved songs honoring the youth who carry freedom’s flame.

We are so excited for this long-awaited performance, accompanied by her daughter Nina Cardenal, who can replicate the elegant guitar stylings of her uncle Salvador plus add a youthful energy to their repertoire as her pure soprano blends with her mother’s alto.

“I think our music has no, it’s timeless, I would say. It has no country, it has not flags. It’s just music for human beings,” said Katia Cardenal.
