WNMU Assistant Professor of Ceramics Courtney Michaud will present “Lucie Rie: The Mother of Modernism in Utilitarian Ceramics” virtually on Friday, May 21, 1:30 p.m.

“The artist I chose to discuss is a famous functional maker who was prevalent in the mid-20th century during a male-dominated era of pottery,” Courtney said of her talk, which is part of an influential women in art lecture series at the Las Cruces Museum of Art. “Lucie Rie quietly paved the way for generations of artist-potters who were looking to make personally expressive pottery that was reflective of the modern world around them. She chose her own path, creating work that embodied modernity and placed aesthetics at the forefront of vessel-making.”
