About
Little Joe Y La Familia is slated to headline the third annual Western New Mexico University ¡Fiesta Latina!, which runs June 21 – 23, 2019. Over the 50 years this Tejano band has performed and recorded, it has developed a unique style influenced by norteño, country, blues and rock-and-roll music.

“Little Joe Y La Familia represents the evolution of a very important musical genre and brings with it a cultural tradition grown out of American history,” said WNMU Assistant to the President for Cultural Affairs Faye McCalmont, who organizes ¡Fiesta Latina!

The Little Joe Y La Familia concert takes places from 9 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, in Old James Stadium on the WNMU campus (1000 W. College Ave.). Doors open at 8 p.m. Advance purchase tickets cost $30, while admission costs $35 at the door.
Led by José María de León Hernández, or Little Joe, since 1959, the band was initially known as Little Joe and the Latinaires and recorded with several Tejano labels in the 1960s. Their first album, “Por un Amor,” kicked off the Latinaires’ rise to popularity and led them to ultimately become one of the “best-selling” Tejano orquestas.

Committed to the farm workers movement led by César Chávez and to the Chicano movement that had emerged across the American Southwest, the band changed its name to Little Joe y La Familia in a reflection of the cultural and political contributions and struggles of the Latin community.

By the 1970s, Little Joe y La Familia was leading La Onda Chicana (“Chicano Wave”) period of Tejano music and drew top musicians like to its ranks. The band’s next album synthesized the best of the ranchero and jaitón traditions and demonstrated an artist effort in code-switching between English and Spanish.

Since, the band has earned Grammys for Best Mexican-American Album, Tejano Album of the Year, and Best Tejano Album, receiving four other Grammy nominations between 1988 and 2003.
