Bring your old outdoor gear and get something new to you at the second annual Western New Mexico University Outdoor Program Gear Swap and Sale on Saturday, April 28, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The swap and sale is part of Continental Divide TrailDays at Old James Stadium on the WNMU campus, and it’s a great opportunity to grab some used gear for an outstanding price or trade in a good piece of gear for something better.

What is the gear sale/swap? The Gear Swap is similar to a yard sale or flea market. This is a great opportunity to grab some used gear for a really good price, or swap a good piece of gear for something better. Connect with local trail groups and others who are interested in the outdoors as well as participate in programming to celebrate Silver City’s designation as the First Gateway City to the Continental Divide Trail.

Who can participate:
Anyone!

How does it work?
If you are interested in participating in the Gear Swap/Sale, you have a few options:

  1. WNMU affiliates (students/faculty/staff) bring your gear to the WNMU Outdoor Program booth and sell or trade as you see fit.
    • You must register with us by calling 538-6253 or emailing outdoors@wnmu.edu. Our booth space is limited and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.
    • Please arrive at our space on Old James Stadium no later than 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 28, that you can get your gear ready. You will stay with your gear until you swap, sell, or decide to leave.
    • Bring cash with you so that you can make your own change.
    • Be ready to barter!
  2. Let the Outdoor Program sell your gear for you.
    • Drop off your gear at The Outpost (located in Barnard Hall) during hours of operation. You don’t have to be a WNMU affiliate to let us sell your gear.
    • Let the Outdoor Program staff know how much you want to charge for each piece of gear and we will inventory the items and provide you a receipt. We will add 15 percent to your price and attempt to sell your gear at the event. The 15 percent increase will be used to support WNMU’s outdoor programming.
    • After the event, you can pick up the proceeds and any unsold gear on Monday, April 30. The Outdoor Program won’t be held responsible for theft or loss.
  3. Donate your gear to the WNMU Outdoor Program and we will sell/swap your gear!
All proceeds will be used to support WNMU outdoor programming. The Outdoor Program will give you a great big thank you for your support.

What kinds of gear can I sell/swap? Outdoor gear that is clean and in good repair. We will accept any of the following: bikes and cycling gear; backpacks; tents; sleeping bags; sleeping pads; stuff sacks; water filters; hiking boots/shoes; GPS units; outdoor clothing; camp stoves; backpacking cook gear; cots; coolers; folding pack chairs; roll-up tables; wetsuits; binoculars; trail guides; field guides (plants, mammals, birds, rocks, herps, etc.); trekking poles; hammocks; air mattresses; day packs; bivy sacks; dog backpacks; fishing rods and gear, including waders; kayaks, canoes; quality inflatable rafts; pack rafts; saddles, pack saddles, hard and soft panniers, horse blankets, bridles, bits, lead ropes, hobbles.
