WOMEN IN STEM: SCIENCE MATTERS FEBRUARY 26-MARCH 1st will showcase WNMU Faculty, Students, Alumni and bring innovating speakers to WNMU. Throughout the week students will get an opportunity to enter a drawing for a scholarship.

Speaker: Martha Cooper, Biologist, Nature Conservancy

Martha Cooper has worked for The Nature Conservancy in Southwest New Mexico since 2006. Working with a diverse group of conservation partners in the region, she manages science, stewardship and restoration projects on the Conservancy’s Gila and Mimbres River Preserves and watersheds. Martha received an MS in 1999 in forest ecosystem science from the University of Maine. She received her BA in 1995 in biology from Amherst College.

Introduction by Tanya Rivers “A Brief History of Women in Math and Computer & Science”

Speaker: Rafaela Sakellariou, HR Business Partner, Google

Nina Rafaela Sakellariou is currently HR Business Partner with YouTube, a department within Google. She has served in Human Resources at Google since 2011. In this capacity she has over seven years of experience partnering alongside engineering leaders at Google and YouTube to identify talented individuals that would contribute to teams across Google. She has also been instrumental in helping empower team leaders to overcome complex organizational challenges through people-related solutions. Outside of work, she’s a big yoga buff and loves to learn about health.

Introduction by Manda Jost “A Brief History of Women in the Sciences”

Speaker: Melissa L. Markell, P.G., National Environmental Policy Act Program Manager at US Air Force Civil Engineer Center

Melissa Markell, serves as National Environmental Policy Act Program Manager at US Air Force Civil Engineer Center. Melissa started her career as an environmental consultant in the private sector before moving to the federal government, where she has worked for 14 years managing Army and Air Force environmental restoration and compliance projects throughout the western United States and Pacific regions. In 2014, Melissa completed a year-long civilian deployment to Afghanistan where she served as Environmental Chief of Bagram Air Base. She holds an MA in Geology from Sate University of New York and a BS in Geology from Montana State University.
