Next weekend, campus will be the center of the Silver City Climathon, a climate solutions hackathon where teams of participants find innovative ways to integrate composting at the household and community level.

Hosted at the WNMU Global Resource Center, the free, two-day event (July 30-31) is focused on improving waste management in Silver City. Registrants will learn from guest speakers, participate workshops, and visit existing community composting locations, also getting the chance to design our community’s composting system and possibly win $800 cash.

“There is a clear need to provide Silver City with the composting infrastructure to manage food waste and channel excess food into the desired diversion hierarchy: first, to feed people experiencing food insecurity, secondly, to find uses for food scraps, and, finally, to collect and compost food waste to enrich soils for ecological restoration,” according to a statement from implementing partners Upper Gila Watershed Alliance and 2811 International Social Change Platform.

This Silver City Climathon is free and open to anyone aged 14+. Sign up online.
