Title: Shame in Supervision: Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis in Counselor Education

Abstract: The supervisory working alliance helps counselors-in-training (CITs) develop into licensed professionals. During supervision, CITs encounter challenges that lead to feelings of shame. This shame left unaddressed can lead to ruptures in the supervisory alliance. The experience of CITs feeling shame in supervision has been given little attention in Counselor Education literature. This phenomenon was explored using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). The following convergent themes were discovered: feeling unheard, belief in wrongdoing, disengagement, feeling scared, valuing validation, and feeling lectured.

Title: Fabulous Flora of the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument

Abstract: Bill will present the results of an ongoing 8-year study of the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument flora in the context of its geology, hydrology, rugged topography, and cultural history. Collaborators on this project (Bill, Dr. Kelly Kindscher – University of Kansas, Dr. Russ Kleinman – WNMU, Dr. Richard Felger (deceased) – University of Arizona, Patrice Mutchnick – “Heart of the Gila”) have documented about 500 plant species in the monument (less than 1 square mile in area) to date, representing more than one-tenth of the entire NM flora. Although more than 90% of these plant species are native to NM, several non-native species (especially white sweet clover) have become abundant and threaten the integrity of the flora along the West Fork of the Gila River within the monument boundaries.
