Acourtia wrightii is an upright herb with sessile leaves and light purple flowers. The achenes have a white pappus. The leaves are ovate and dentate with small spines on the teeth. Acourtia wrightii is a lower to mid-elevation species. It can grow to about a meter tall and lives on dry rocky hillsides. Acourtia thurberi is a related species with fewer florets per inflorescence and with stipitate glandular phyllaries that is found in Hidalgo County.
