Amphidium mougeotii (Bruch & Schimp.) Schimp.

Family: Amphidiaceae

Status: Native

Synonyms:
Zygodon mougeotii Bruch & Schimp.
Barbula woodii Schimp.
Barbula blytii Schimp.

Amphidium mougeotii is most likely best differentiated from A. lapponicum by the autoicous nature of the latter and dioicous nature of Amphidium mougeotii. This results in sporophytes commonly being present in clumps of A. lapponicum and much less common in those of A. mougeotii. The papillae of A. mougeotii are a bit smaller as are the cell sizes. The appearance of the mid-lamina is different under the microscope because of these two differences. The shape of the leaves is also slightly different, such that the leaves of A. lapponicum appear "S" shaped under the scope when moist, while those of A. mougeotii lack the obvious sigmoid shape.

Many thanks to the University of Colorado Herbarium (COLO), Erin Tripp, & Dina Clark for permitting us to photograph this specimen!
