Anacolia menziesii (Turner) Paris
Family: Bartramiaceae
Status: Native
Synonyms:
Bartramia menziesii Turner
Anacolia menziesii var. baueri (Hampe) Paris
Anacolia menziesii is similar to A. laevisphaera with long, serrate leaves. The dense tomentum is very obvious. However, Anacolia menziesii has smooth distal laminal cells that lack or nearly lack the obvious prorate cells seen on A. laevisphaera. In addition, the distal lamina of A. menziesii is one or two cells thick, as opposed to the 3 or 4 cell thick distal lamina of A. laevisphaera. In New Mexico, A. menziesii is known from one collection by W.D. Worthington from the Organ Mountains. Our photographs are of a specimen we collected in Mendocino County, California, in Willits.
