Andropogon gerardii is purplish red appearing grass that grows to 3 or 4 feet tall. The spikelets have awns and come as pairs, with one spikelet sessile and one on a pedicel. The pedicellate spikelet in Andropogon gerardii is almost as large as the sessile one at full maturity. The pedicel is round in cross section. The inflorescence branches seem to come off in pairs or threes. Andropogon gerardii is found at roadside at middle elevation.
