Anisacanthus thurberi is a low elevation shrub that likes sandy soil.
It has showy large orange tubular flowers with exerted stamens. In the winter, the
twigs are easily recognized by virtue of the distal leaves which are retained well into
the winter and the characteristic leaf scars which have a very large central vascular bundle and
two pinpoint lateral bundles.
