Apopellia endiviifolia (Dicks.) Nebel & D. Quandt
Family: Pelliaceae
Status: Native
Synonyms:
Jungermannia endiviifolia Dicks.
Apopellia endiviifolia is one of the largest simple thallous liverworts in New Mexico. The thalli are one cell thick, and are translucent on a slide, but opaque against the mud on which they can be found. Near the growing tips of thalli on the undersurface of fresh specimens one can find hairs that produce mucus, called "slime hairs" that are 4-9 cells long. At the end of a slime hair there is a slime papilla. Slime hairs are not well preserved in herbarium specimens. The rhizoids arise from the central area of the bottom surface of the thalli. The thalli do not have a differentiated margin.
Many thanks to the New York Botanical Garden and Laura Briscoe for loaning this specimen (NYBG barcode #00260944) for photography.
