Arctoa starkei (F. Weber & D. Mohr) Loeske

Family: Rhabdoweisiaceae

Status: Native

Synonyms:
Dicranum starkei F. Weber & D. Mohr
Dicranum curvifolium Schleich. ex DC.

Arctoa starkei looks like a Dicranum by habit. The best character by which to differentiate it from that genus is by a cross section of the costa. The costa of Arctoa starkei lacks well-differentiated stereid cells. The capsule is ribbed when dry and is indistinctly strumose at the base (looks like it has a small swelling). The operculum is obliquely long rostrate.

Many thanks to the University of Colorado Herbarium (COLO), Erin Tripp, & Dina Clark for permitting us to photograph this specimen!
