Asterella palmeri (Austin) Underwood
Family: Aytoniaceae
Status: Native
Synonyms:
Fimbraria palmeri Austin
Asterella palmeri has 0.5-1cm long thalli that are 5-10mm wide. These thalli are noticably smaller than the otherwise similar A. lindenbergiana. The ventral surface is brown-black to purple (a bit darker than A. lindenbergiana) with
purple scales that have a long lanceolate appendage that is 1-2 seriate. The sporophyte has a fringed receptacle. Mature
spores are brown-black.
Many thanks to the New York Botanical Garden and Laura Briscoe for loaning us these specimens (NYBG barcode #00267164 & 00267163) for photography.
