Astragalus humistratus var. sonorae is nearly identical to A. humistratus var. humistratus except for the more hairy upper leaflet surface giving the leaflets a gray appearance instead of green look. Astragalus humistratus var. sonorae is probably more common, and is found in disturbed areas at middle elevation including Silver City. The flowers can be heavily marked with pink or purple.
