Athyrium filix-femina var. californicum is found in very moist forest near creeks and in moist swales at the roadside at upper elevation. The rhizome and stipe bases have tan to brown, large lanceolate scales. The frond is acute at the apex and gradually tapered at the base. The sori are hooked or horseshoe shaped and the indusia are dentate and ciliate. Athyrium filix-femina var. californicum usually grows as a larger plant, but can also be found much smaller when young.
