Beckmannia syzigachne subsp. baicalensis is found in moist soil. The panicle is made up of spikelike secund branches. The glumes are about equal in length and the spikelet is nearly round. With the small awn on the lemma the very odd shape is reminiscent of a goldfish without the fins sticking out its tongue.
