Plants of the Gila Wilderness

Presented in Association with the

Bryum argenteum Hedwig

Family: Bryaceae

Status: Native

Synonyms:
Bryum lanatum P. Beauvois

Bryum argenteum is much more common in the rest of the country than it is in the Gila. We now combine B. lanatum with B. argenteum. The silver color is really due to the loss of chlorophyll from the distal half of the leaves as they age on the stem. This is the typical Silver Sidewalk Moss that occurs in sidewalk cracks as well as on rocks and boulders in the forest.
