Cannabis sativa is an herb with distinctive, palmately compound leaves with serrate leaflets. Gland-headed hairs contain tetrahydrocannabinol. The flowers are unisexual and inconspicuous. It occurs both in cultivation and as sporadic individual plants within the lower to middle elevations of the Gila.
