Chiloscyphus pallescens is a relatively large leafy liverwort that grows in mats. The leaves have an entire margin and a succubous insertion. There are large underleaves that have two acuminate lobes. There are few rhizoids. In fresh specimens, C. pallescens has 4-12 oil bodies per cell and C. polyanthos has 2-4 oil bodies per cell. C. pallescens is very similar to C. polyanthos. The mid-leaf cells of C. pallescens are 40-50 microns long while those of C. polyanthos are only 30-35 microns long. C. pallescens is found in moist areas at upper elevation.
