Conocephalum conicum (L.) Dumort. of North American authors
Conocephalum salebrosum is a very large thallous liverwort. It has deep reticulations on the thallous that give it a snake-like or reptilian appearance. The somewhat hexagonal areas of the thallous each have a raised pore with cells arranged in circumferential rows surrounding it. C. salebrosum was formerly known as C. conicum, but because of molecular studies the name "Conocephalum conicum" is now reserved mostly for specimens outside of North America. We found this specimen of Conocephalum salebrosum growing on very moist sandy soil a few feet from the creek at the Lower Hondo Campground in the Taos Ski Valley.
