Dicranum fuscescens Turner

Family: Dicranaceae

Status: Native

Synonyms:
Dicranum scoparum var. fuscescens (Turner) Béhéré

Dicranum brevifolium, Dicranum acutifolium, Dicranum fuscescens and Dicranum muehlenbeckii are all exceedingly similar and many of the identifying characteristics are not apparent in the New Mexico material. D. fuscescens is best determined by its partly two-stratose margin and by the papillose-spinose abaxial surface of the distal costa on cross section. At this time, a single specimen of Dicranum fuscescens is known from New Mexico-- collected by G.J. Ikenberry in 1938 and identified by W. Steere.

Many thanks to the University of Colorado Herbarium (COLO), Erin Tripp, & Dina Clark for permitting us to photograph this specimen!
