Didymodon tectorum (Müll. Hal.) K. Saito
Family: Pottiaceae
Status: Native
Synonyms:
Barbula tectorum Müll. Hal.
Didymodon tectorum was first collected in New Mexico in 1922 by E.B. Bartram from Santa Fe County. Bartram's specimen is loaded with two-celled, spherical orange-red gemmae in the leaf axillae and along the stem. Some may even be on rhizoids-- they are so abundant in the specimen it is difficult to tell. The leaves of Shevock's specimen from China are longer acuminate and the stems lack the abundant gemmae. Bruce Allen collected the only other specimen from New Mexico from the Sacramento Mountains in 2010. We photographed Bartram's New Mexico specimen. Most leaves are keeled and lie on their sides on a wet mount slide. There are two well-developed stereid bands in the costa, and a strong stem central strand. The leaves are acute and the margins are revolute to the apex. The costa is percurrent to excurrent. Papillae are present, but only conspicuous on cross section. In the field, Didymodon tectorum is probably easy to confuse with Didymodon rigidulus.
Many thanks to the New York Botanical Garden and Laura Briscoe for loaning us this specimen (NYBG barcode 00621663) for photography.
