Dieteria asteroides var. asteroides is very similar to Dietiera canescens and Dieteria bigelovii, which differ based on whether or not the stems and peduncles are prominently stipitate glandular or hairy and to what degree, and in leaf width. In the case of Dieteria asteroides var. asteroides, the phyllaries and peduncles are hairy but not prominently stipitate glandular, the phyllaries are hairy on both the bases and tips, and the midstem leaf blades are between 6 and 20mm wide. The corolla is lavender and the disc is yellow. Dieteria asteroides var. asteroides is found in dry ground at middle elevation.
