Encalypta vulgaris Hedwig
Family: Encalyptaceae
Status: Native
Synonyms:
Encalypta vulgaris Hedw. var. apiculata Wahlenb.
Encalypta vulgaris Hedw. var. mutica Brid.
Encalypta vulgaris, like Encalyta ciliata, has a calyptra that completely covers the capsule. These mosses are called "candle snuffer mosses" because of their shape. However, E. vulgaris has a costa that does not quite reach the apex of the leaf, and it certainly is not excurrent. In addition, the leaf is more strap-shaped than the very elliptic leaf of E. ciliata. The calyptra of E. ciliaris has triangular appendages at the base, whereas the calyptra of E. vulgaris is smooth at the base. Encalypa vulgaris is found in moist canyons along streams.
