Entodon beyrichii (Schwägr.) Müll. Hal.
Family: Entodontaceae
Status: Native
Synonyms:
Entodon erythropus Mitt.
Entodon beyrichii is a large pleurocarpous moss than resembles Entodon seductrix in appearance. Both are shiny green to yellow brown and have quite concave leaves with an abruptly acute apex. The cells of the mid lamina are very elongate. The most distinctive characteristic of E. beyrichii seems to be its densely (but minutely) papillose exostome teeth. These are the outer teeth on the capsule, which are smooth or nearly so on E. seductrix. Entodon beyrichii is at its northernmost range extent in NM, AZ, and TX. We found it growing on a rocky outcrop at about 7000 ft elevation in mixed conifer forest.
