Entosthodon sonorae (Cardot) Steere

Family: Funariaceae

Status: Native

Synonyms:
Funaria sonorae Cardot
Entosthodon bartramii Grout

Entosthodon sonorae in its best described form has stems that are 2-6mm long, an upright capsule with a long neck, and leaves that are serrate near the apex and have a costa that ends 7-10 cells before an apex that may be apiculate but lacks an awn. In practice, all of these characters vary considerably between specimens, such that a short awn may be present, the capsule may be inclined to horizontal, and the peristome can be either single or double. E. sonorae is a desert species known only in the U.S. from Arizona and recently New Mexico. It is frequently found growing among other desert mosses.

Many thanks to the New York Botanical Garden and Laura Briscoe for loaning us these specimen and for permitting us to photograph them (NYBG Bar Code #'s 00780329 thru 00780333).
