Frullania mexicana/pluricarinata complex
Family: Frullaniaceae
Status: Native
Synonyms:
Awaits phylogenetic treatment
The genus Frullania has been re-evaluated for the state of New Mexico by John Atwood of the Missouri Botanical Garden.
Many specimens that were formerly assigned to other species are now thought to mostly be part of an as yet poorly defined complex of more than one species-- currently referred to as the "mexicana/pluricarinata complex." Frullania mexicana/pluricarinata will contain Frullania mexicana, which was recently found in New Mexico by John Brinda and is used here as an example. This species has a perianth with many keels or ridges-- it is "pluricarinate".
Many thanks to the Missouri Botanical Garden and John Atwood for all their help and loaning this specimen for photography.
