Garrya wrightii is a common shrub found growing from rocks or at the bases of larger shrubs or trees; more rarely it grows in the open. It is commonly found in middle elevation with Alligator Juniper and Pinon Pine. The ovate opposite leaves are "praying" , and this characteristic helps differentiate it from Gray Oak with which it can be confused. The fruit is a smooth slightly glaucous spherical berry which starts out green and turns purple and then brown or black. It contains two seeds each of which has a polar brown spot.
