Mosses of New Mexico Outside of the Gila Wilderness

Presented in Association with the
Western New Mexico University Department of Natural Sciences

Geheebia fallax (Hedw.) R.H. Zander

Family: Pottiaceae

Status: Native

Synonyms:
Barbula fallax Hedw.
Didymodon fallax (Hedw.) R.H. Zander

Geheebia fallax has elongate cells over the adaxial costa at midleaf, as do G. tophacea and G. ferrugina. G. tophacea has a more obtuse apex and a leaf shape with a narrower base. G. ferruginea, which is only known at this time from a single collection in New Mexico, has leaves that are more strongly recurved on the stem when moist and lie on their sides on the slide. G. ferruginea itself is only known from two collections at this time in New Mexico.

Many thanks to the University of Colorado Herbarium, Erin Tripp, and Dina Clark for loaning us this specimen to photograph.
