Gemmabryum dichotomum is easily recognized when it has abundant yellow bulbils (small, bud-like asexual propagula) in the upper leaf axils on stems. The moss then looks bicolored-- yellow where the stems have abundant propagula, and dark green where they are absent. The leaves lack a border (limbidium) and are crowded onto stems but not julaceous. The plants are densely tufted but small, usually under a cm tall. Gemmabryum dichotomum is found at middle elevation on moist streambanks.
