Goodyera oblongifolia Rafinesque
(Rattlesnake Orchid)

Family: Orchidaceae

Status: Native

Synonyms:
Goodyera decipiens (Hooker) F.T. Hubbard
Peramium decipiens (Hooker) Piper
Peramium menziesii (Lindley) Morong

For most of the year Goodyera oblongifolia is a very inconspicuous orchid. In the summer, a slender flower spike bearing spirally arranged small greenish-white blossoms arises from the center of the basal rosette of leaves. The leaves are helpful to identify the plant when it is not flowering. They have a very obvious central white stripe with blotches of white in the periphery. It seems to prefer mixed conifer forest habitat at higher elevations.
