Grimmia teretinervis Limpricht
Family: Grimmiaceae
Status: Native
Synonyms:
Schistidium teretinervis (Limpricht) Limpricht
Grimmia teretinervis is rather small & inconspicuous for the genus, indeed it is a bit nondescript.
It has not been found with sporophytes in North America and thus may be overlooked or not collected. Its
overall impression is that of a Schistidium, and indeed it once was placed in Schistidium.
The leaves shorter and more ovate at the base toward the bottom of each stem, becoming more elongate and
lanceolate distally along stems. Additionally, the hairpoints tend to be absent lower on the stem and
present as nubbins or very short hairpoints toward the apex of the stems. At the level of the hand lens,
G. teretinervis lacks a clearly characteristic feature. However, at the microscopic level the costal
cross-section is round distally-- convex on both sides of the lamina. The lamina itself is bistratose distally.
Grimmia teretinervis is found on steeper, drier calcareous substrates.
Many thanks to John Brinda for bringing this ID to our attention!
